What Are The Tinnitus Causes?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
David Giles asked:

Ten to twelve percent of the population has to deal with tinnitus.  Over the years scientist and doctors have not been able to come up with a cure.  When you have tinnitus you will have to suffer, since going to doctors cannot cure you. This is why people with ear ringing search for a natural tinnitus treatment.

A cure has not been found since tinnitus is not a priority in the scientific world.  Most of the information known about tinnitus has been known for a long time.  It has been in the past hundreds of years that alternative medicine has provide some tinnitus treatment and this treatment is as good as available from doctors.

There are many reasons why you would have ringing in your ears.  In cases where physical ear damage has occurred with loss of hearing, you may have ringing for the rest of your life.  But not all tinnitus cases come from the same cause and so there are many natural tinnitus treatments that can work for someone but not for others.

Tinnitus can be the first symptom of a more serious disease like meningitis.  Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges caused by a virus or bacteria infection.  Head injuries can also result in ear ringing.  Some people develop tinnitus after being in a severe car accident.   It has also been found that many diabetics have tinnitus and whether diabetes is the cause of this ringing has not been confirmed.

One cause of ear ringing is excess exposure to loud sounds over a long period of time.  This excess exposure can be related to heavy traffic noise, construction work noise, or any other noise related to your job.  High pitch sounds are more damaging than low frequency sounds.  Damaging the ear structure will make it more difficult for a tinnitus treatment to work.

Various drugs have been used to as a tinnitus treatment.  However, none have been proven to provide a cure for ear ringing.  Since the cause of ringing can be different for each person, some drugs maybe helpful.  Drugs have side effects and you can become dependent on them after long term use.

Stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to tinnitus, but they can also lead to other diseases.  Experiencing these psychological conditions over long periods of time can lead to being unable to ignore sounds or ringing that may appear in the head.  This in turn can result in more anxiety and in more ringing.  Use of yoga as an anxiety tinnitus treatment can reduce the ringing.

Hard or excessive ear wax, ear infections, and ear operations can bring on ear ringing.  Ear wax can be come compacted in your ear and cause damage to your ear drum.  Your ear wax should be soft but not runny.   A hard wax in your ear is an indication that you are not getting enough omega 3 and 6 oils in your diet.

Here is the tinnitus treatment diet.  This is a list of foods that has been associated with making tinnitus worse.  Avoid these foods, coffee, tea, cocoa, and other caffeine drinks.  Saturated fats have also been associated with hearing loss and tinnitus.  Following a natural diet will help reduce tinnitus.

Here are some nutritional tinnitus treatments that you can use to lessen the ringing effects.  Take good supplement of vitamin A, and vitamin D.  Supplement with iron and zinc.  Limit the use of iron, since an excess can result in cardiovascular conditions.  Reduce consumption of saturated fat and take fish oil supplements daily.

Tinnitus Relief

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Michael Kinnard asked:

Having been diagnosed with tinnitus nearly fifteen years ago I, like many other tinnitus sufferers, thought that my life had fallen apart. During the first two years I was certain that I would never be able to enjoy my life as I once used to and struggled to come to terms with that fact.

My tinnitus symptoms were, and still are, a high-pitched ringing noise in both ears and a slight hearing loss due to listening to loud music at a concert without protecting my hearing. Having researched and written about tinnitus extensively, it is apparent to me that those symptoms are much the same for approximately 90% of all tinnitus sufferers. Not all of those 90% have damaged their hearing at a concert, but in nearly all cases some form of hearing loss is the root of the problem.

Sadly there is still no complete cure for tinnitus, despite many websites offering “miracle cures for tinnitus”. It is very important that a tinnitus sufferer accepts that fact and doesn’t waste time and money in the hope that the noise will go away completely. It is a much better idea to start using what help is available, and the great thing is that most of that help costs nothing and is more a case of making changes in your lifestyle and your home and working environments.

So what help is there? Personally I don’t believe in herbal remedies or medications that claim to specifically treat tinnitus. What is true is that they can help you with an underlying problem such as depression, and that the benefits of feeling better due to the medication taking effect can greatly reduce tinnitus. The reason for this is simple: tinnitus’ worst enemy is stress. The more stressed you are the louder you perceive your tinnitus to be. If you are depressed you will naturally feel more stressed about life in general than you would if you weren’t depressed.

Your general wellbeing also affects tinnitus. The healthier you are the less strain your body has to deal with. Changing to a healthier diet, stopping smoking, the less caffeine you intake and learning to relax on a regular basis all help you reduce and take control of tinnitus. If you can find ten minutes every day, preferably at the same time each day, and just concentrate on relaxing you will soon notice that your tinnitus is substantially reduced around about the time you are relaxing and for quite some time after. Try and add more ten-minute pockets of relaxation each day if you have the time.

Avoiding silent environments if at all possible is vital in reducing and controlling tinnitus. Many tinnitus sufferers who have damaged hearing are afraid of noise as they fear making their hearing even worse and tend to seek out silent environments. This is the worst thing a tinnitus sufferer can do. Instead, add sounds to a silent environment - especially music. The idea is not to drown out the tinnitus with loud music, but to distract yourself from hearing your tinnitus noise by having music at a low volume in the background. Even listening to the radio or having the TV on at a low level volume can have the same effect. Once you start to implement these techniques you soon begin to notice your tinnitus much less.

If you google “tinnitus”, most sponsored links, i.e. adverts, offer various cures. These really do not work. There are also books written in many cases by doctors who don’t suffer from tinnitus who therefore don’t understand some of the more subtle ways of reducing tinnitus. If you google “take control of tinnitus” or “tinnitus reduction” you are more likely to find books, blogs and articles that look at the real ways of reducing tinnitus. Spend some time reading the information available and try some techniques. Not all techniques work for everyone and some techniques work for some people but not for others. It really is a case of “trial and error”.

Tinnitus will only disturb or annoy you if you let it. I haven’t been bothered by tinnitus for over ten years now. I use all of the above techniques, and many others, to keep my tinnitus under control. You can most definitely do that too.

Tinnitus Treatment – Know the Facts

Sunday, March 1st, 2009
Corwin Brown asked:

Tinnitus is a condition that is commonly found in both the young and old. But what is tinnitus? Tinnitus is the perception of a ringing sound in the ears that can be heard only by the person experiencing the tinnitus.

Tinnitus and hearing loss can be permanent conditions, thus, precautionary measures are advisable. If a ringing in the ears is audible after exposure to a loud environment, such as a rock concert or a work place, it means that damage has been done. Prolonged exposure to noise levels as low as 70 dB can result in damage to hearing (see noise health effects.)

Treatment effects were assessed by using a standardized tinnitus questionnaire directly after the therapy and three months later. Evaluation after three months revealed remarkable advantages for the group of patients who received the combination TMS treatment.

Determine the cause of your tinnitus by exploring the 4 main causes of tinnitus listed under the heading Homeopathic Tinnitus Remedies on the menu at left or by clicking on the buttons at the top of this page. One of the first facts you will discover is that over 90% of tinnitus is caused by cochlear damage - which is normally the result of exposure to noise, ear infection or a blow to the head.

After a careful evaluation, your doctor may find an identifiable cause and be able to treat or make recommendations to treat the tinnitus. Once you have had a thorough evaluation, an essential part of treatment is your own understanding of the tinnitus (what has caused it, and your options for treatment).

Protect your hearing at work. Your work place should follow Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Wear ear plugs or earmuffs and follow hearing conservation guidelines set by your employer.

The attitude you have towards your tinnitus is crucial, and people with a positive attitude find it more manageable. Having a trusting relationship with your doctor, who takes your concerns seriously, and is willing to try several approaches to treatment if necessary, will help you to feel that you are making some progress.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a standard approach. CBT is a combination of cognitive therapy, which examines unwanted thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs (called cognitive processes) and behavioural therapy, which focuses on behaviour in response to those thoughts.

Hypnosis is a very common treatment for a lot of illnesses including tinnitus. Tinnitus can be caused by a lot of loud noise of even sinus pressure. Hypnosis is known to help get rid of the ringing in your ears and actually prevent it from coming back. It involves listening to music that is designed to get rid of the tinnitus completely. I have not tried this method personally, but have read a lot of good things about it.

Many patients find that music, particularly classical passages that don’t contain wide variations in loudness (ampliltude) can be both soothing to the limbic system (the emotional processor in the brain that is commonly negatively linked to a patient’s reaction to tinnitus) and stimulating to the auditory cortex. If a hearing loss is present, it may be necessary to alter the spectrum of the music so that the cortical neurons.
